  • How do I start if I am a beginner?

If you are an adult (ages 16 or older) it is best to attend a class on a Monday or Wednesday evening.

If you are a parent of a child (ages 5 or older), you can come anytime that the children’s classes are held.

  • What should I wear?

You do not need to wear anything special for the first day. Just wear comfortable clothes that you would normally wear to the gym. (sweatpants, leggings, tee shirt)

  • What should I expect to do on my first day?

You will be instructed by an experienced Instructor / BJJ practitioner. The BJJ Instructor will go over basic movements and techniques to introduce you to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

You or your parent guardian will be expected to sign a participation waiver form before you can participate in a class.

  • What happens during a typical class?

A typical class starts with (unstructured or structured) warm ups and stretching. After warming up, the group lesson covers the technique of the day followed by positional drills. At the end of the drills, there is typically ample time for students to train with each other.

  • Has the Academy adopted CDC and Local County recommended COVID-19 Safety Protocols?

Yes, our focus is to ensure our students and instructors are able to enjoy the benefits of training in a responsible and safe manner.

Our Instructors are all fully vaccinated, and we encourage all students to be vaccinated or be tested regularly to ensure a safe training environment for all.

Our safety guidelines for Batata BJJ Academy include: 

• Immediately wash your hands or use hand sanitizer upon entering the academy.

• Windows and doors will remain open whenever possible to improve airflow.

• Please do not come in if you, or any one in your family, have COVID-19 symptoms or a fever.

• If you show symptoms of sickness, you will be asked to remain separate from other students. 

• Waiting area will be limited to the foyer of the academy and we ask observers to social distance if they are not masked or fully vaccinated.
